You’ve saved the date and got the outfit that will crown you the ‘Best Dressed Wedding Guest’ – now, you need to decide on a gift for the soon-to-be newlyweds. Wedding gift giving can be a tough, stressful task but if you follow a few simple rules, you’ll find the perfect gift to spoil the couple as they begin their marriage.
Are wedding gifts required?
While it is customary for guests to give wedding gifts to the bride and groom, you are never under obligation to do so. Many people believe that these gifts are in exchange for their invitation to the nuptials, but they’re to show your support to the bride and groom and wish them good luck as they enter this new chapter. However, if you have already given a bridal shower or engagement present, traditionally it is good practice to give a wedding gift as well.
How much should you spend on a wedding gift?
There are a couple of ways to decide on the amount you should spend on a wedding gift:
- Look at your budget and work out how much you can afford. You don’t want to set your budget too low, but you don’t want to go overboard and leave yourself short on cash.
- Look at your relationship with the couple. If the bride/groom is your sister, brother, or best friend, the value of the gift will most likely be higher than if he/she is your co-worker or distant relative.
Once you’ve worked all that out, set yourself a budget and only look for gifts within it.
Should you give a cash gift?
In a recent survey by Andreadreams, 44% of the UK population and 39% of the USA population surveyed said they opt for cash or gift cards for newlyweds. Why? Of those surveyed, 32% said it was because the newlyweds themselves requested it, 27% said because the couple already live together so probably have most household items they need and another 27% said so that the couple can choose a present they really want. The research also showed that only 1 in 5 people buying something from the couple’s ‘Wedding Gift List’. It’s clear there is absolutely nothing wrong with giving a cash gift as it offers more choice and freedom to the couple to spend it on something they really want or need.
What if there is a ‘NO GIFTS’ request?
The only time you may see any mention of wedding gifts on the invitations is if the couple are specifically requesting that no gifts are needed and that all they want is to share their special day with their nearest and dearest. While you may still want to give them something, do your best to respect their wishes or ask if they would like for you to donate something to a charity of their choice
What are appropriate gifts?
If you’re stressing over gift ideas, the best thing to do is simply ask the bride and groom what they would like. This way you know you’re being considerate of their personal taste and other preferences. If you don’t want to ask them, ask other guests what they’re gifting to get your own inspiration.
How do I give the gift?
Many couples will request that gifts be sent to their home before the wedding as it limits what they have to transport and ensures their safety. However, if you are you unable to send the gift in advance, the venue will usually have a designated place where gifts are stored. Always attach a card to your gift so the couple know who to send a thank you note to.
